If you were invisible for a day, what’s the first thing you would do?
If I always had the power to be invisible, I’d definitely use it for good…but only for a day? I’d absolutely be up to some mischief haha. I’d probably take some money/food from different places and then go peep on some ladies at Victoria’s Secret or something haha…you know you’d do the same! Oh and I’d watch a lottttt of free movies at the theater.
When you are not on the road or recording, what do you like to do?
We all like to stay as busy as possible with different musical and non musical side ventures but when I’ve got real downtime I just like to hang out with my small group of childhood friends from home. We just chill and watch some games, movies, etc. Otherwise I absolutely enjoy reading in my free time. I get my fill of excitement on the road so when home I’m VERY low key.
Three things you cant do with out (not necessities – food/clothes/music)
Phone – its not that I’m all addicted to my blackberry, but it’s absolutely essential for keeping up with business/email while traveling.
Moleskine Notebook/Tape Recorder – The two are a bit of a package deal. I’m always writing or doodling something in there and I have the WORST memory when it comes to remembering new musical ideas so I’m constantly singing melodies/recording parts onto that little tape recorder otherwise they’d be lost forever.
My cat Penelope – she’s my right hand feline…my partner in crime. She doesn’t come traveling with me but she’s the first thing I rush to when I get back home.
What does your band pride itself on?
I’d like to say that we pride ourselves on being really self sufficient. From the music side to the business side, we really enjoy being hands on and capable of handling every aspect of what we do. We form a system of Checks & Balances between us, so we’ve got all the bases covered.
One thing you can’t do that you would like to do?
I would LOVE to be able to whistle. To paraphrase your people, I’m absolute “rubbish” at it.
Greatest personal achievement?
Growing up I always wanted to have an album out in stores everywhere by the time I was 21 and I was able to make that happen. To now have two albums out by 23 is more than I expected. I’ve been blessed in that I’ve achieved most of my childhood dreams…from here I just want to be a great son to my parents and make sure they’re taken care of.
Top five bands you think everyone should check out?
Whew, that’s always SO hard! Here’s a random 5:
A Tribe Called Quest – my favorite musical group of all time. They transcend hip hop and make timeless music
Brandon Price – he’s a really talented up and coming MC from NY. I’m blown away by his first mixtape. Google him
Wavves – I really enjoy his/their new album “King of The Beach.” It was a fun listen this summer
Curren$y – One of my favorites for awhile now. An amazing MC from New Orleans that really has his own vibe and world. You gotta peep his album “Pilot Talk”
Janelle Monae – She’s amazing…give a listen and fall in love
Favourite toy/thing you had when you were growing up?
I was never without this little blue stuffed bear that I called “Blue Bear.” He was basically my best friend and went everywhere with me. I went to the beach once with my family and left him behind at the hotel. I cried the whole drive back until the cleaning lady called and told us they found him and would mail him back. My mom has him saved to this day.
If you could give the world one piece of advice what would that be?
Life’s short and you only get one shot at it. Don’t take a single day for granted and really make your time here count. We can achieve beautiful things….so don’t get caught up in the BS. Most things aren’t worth sweating… just enjoy it!
